REQUIREMENTS

Education:  Bachelor’s Degree in special education, social work, counseling, or alternative/comparable degree from an approved preparation program. Current/valid South Dakota Social Worker, Counselor or Teacher Certificate preferred.


Experience:  
None.  Previous experience in school setting preferred.


Physical Requirements:  
Constant hand-eye/mind-eye coordination.  Frequent walking, keyboarding, speaking, writing, bending, carrying, pushing, pulling, sitting, and turning.  Some lifting up to 30 lbs.  Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of this position.


Other Requirements:  
Excellent written and verbal communication, strategic planning, problem solving, organizational, time management, and conflict resolution skills.  Computer proficiency in word processing, spreadsheets, data entry, email, and internet. Ability to keep information confidential.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS & DUTIES

  1. Collaborates with school staff to foster and sustain positive learning environments for all students.
  2. Support students in managing behaviors by utilizing supportive strategies and tailored support plans within alternative learning settings to regulate behavior.
  3. Records and tracks student progress toward behavior and achievement objectives.
  4. Conducts observations and gather classroom documentation required for referrals and reintegration processes.
  5. Provides teachers and parents with progress updates.
  6. Contributes to the implementation and refinement of student behavior programs
  7. Supervises student activities as necessary.
  8. Assists in building home-school communication concerning student behaviors.
  9. Aids in implementing behavior intervention strategies which are in behavior plans and/or supported by district practices to promote and maintain appropriate behavior, as determined by the problem-solving team.
  10. Guides students in progressing toward social, emotional, behavioral, and/or adaptive goals.
  11. Encourages positive behaviors through reinforcement, redirection, and other techniques.
  12. Assists students during transition periods.
  13. Participates in the gradual transfer of strategy and behavior plan implementation.
  14. Attends required meetings.
  15. Prepares reports and manages documentation as required.
  16. Performs other duties as assigned.
