REQUIREMENTS
Education: Master’s Degree and endorsements in special education, elementary, secondary, or special education administration. Current, valid South Dakota Teaching Certificate.
Experience: Minimum five years of teaching experience in a special education setting. Previous administrative experience preferred.
Physical Requirements: Constant hand-eye/mind-eye coordination. Frequent walking, keyboarding, speaking, writing, bending, carrying, pushing, pulling, sitting, stooping, and turning. Some lifting up to 30 lbs. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of this position.
Other Requirements: Knowledge of the best educational practices and effective school research. Excellent written and verbal communication, strategic planning, problem solving, organizational, time management, conflict resolution skills, and computer proficiency. Ability to keep information confidential.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS & DUTIES
- Responsible for the daily management and operations of the Special Education Department.
- Enforces district policy, school guidelines, state and federal laws, and administrative directives; administering discipline when appropriate.
- Manages the hiring process for special education staff; assigns staff accordingly.
- Responsible for supervision and evaluation of special education staff.
- Plans and conducts staff and department meetings; implements staff development activities.
- Disseminates current information concerning laws, rules, and regulations to students, staff, and parents.
- Responsible for administering the special education budget and demonstrates fiscal responsibility.
- Collects, maintains, and reports data required for special education funding.
- Collaborates with Director of Education Services and principals with curriculum development and modification to meet individual needs of students.
- Oversees procedures for identification, referral, evaluation, placement, and reappraisal of students in regard to the special education program.
- Authorizes and oversees the development and implementation of student individualized education programs (IEPs).
- Facilitates the inclusion of special needs learners in both curricular and co-curricular activities.
- Leads staff in developing and implementing methods for program evaluation.
- Responsible for the security and safety of students and staff.
- Contracts with agencies for services necessary outside of District.
- Attends required meetings and prepares required reports.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
